Challenge Cup action returns to Emerald Headingley

Whilst the Rhinos mens team may not be in action this weekend, Emerald Headingley Stadium will take centre stage as all four Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter Finals will take place at the stadium on Friday and Saturday this week but whilst all four ties in one weekend is new, the stadium has hosted Cup games not featuring Leeds in the earlier rounds of the Cup dating back to 1904.

All four Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter Finals will be broadcast live on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May – and all of them from the Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

St Helens tie with Huddersfield Giants will be shown live on Sky Sports at 8.15pm on Friday 7 May. Before then, Catalans Dragons take on Warrington Wolves in a 6pm kick off, also on Sky Sports.

Coverage switches to BBC on Saturday 8 May, with BBC1 showing Hull FC versus Wigan Warriors at 2.30pm, and Castleford Tigers and Salford Red Devils going head-to-head live on BBC2 at 5pm.

As all Rugby League fans know, Headingley hosted the first ever Challenge Cup Final between Batley and St Helens back in 1897 when Wembley was still a pleasure gardens with a half built replica of the Eiffel Tower as its main attraction. The stadium has hosted many semi finals as well down the years when you would expect a neutral venue to be used. However, as with this weekend, it has also been classed as ‘home’ on 19 other occasions for fixtures outside of the latter rounds. In addition, in 1998 and 1999, Bramley were eliminated by amateur opposition at Headingley on both occasions however in those seasons Bramley did use Headingley as their home venue.
