On this Day – 27th April
ON THIS DAY in 1997 the Rhinos took on London Broncos in Super League for the first time that season. So far Leeds had won five of the seven games they had played and were now experiencing a run of three straight wins, having beaten St Helens, Castleford Tigers and Sheffield Eagles, but in this game they faced tough competition against a London side in top form and the Broncos who went onto finish second that year easily beat Leeds 40-16.
Francis Cummins, Marcus St Hilaire and Paul Sterling all scored tries for the Rhinos and Iestyn Harris was on target twice, kicking two goals but it was not enough and Leeds lost their third game of the season.
ON THIS DAY in 2007 Leeds welcomed Catalans Dragons to Headingley. The visitors crossed first but it Leeds soon took control and ran out big winners in the end.
ON THIS DAY in 2017, Leeds played Huddersfield Giants at Headingley but slipped up on the chance to go top of the league with defeat to the men in Claret and Gold on a wet and windy night.
The Rhinos opened the scoring early through Matt Parcell but Huddersfield hit back after 21 minutes when Sam Wood timed his kick to perfection for Jake Mamo to race through, juggle the ball and then get it down behind the posts.
Current Rhino Kruise Leeming then set up the next score with a 40:20 kick before going over himself from dummy half. The home side levelled the score before half time thanks to Joel Moon, benefitting by good work from Stevie Ward and Jack Walker.
Dale Ferguson gave the visitors the lead back before the Giants crossed for the crucial next score. Leeds looked to be on the attack when Walker came away from his line brilliantly but when Hall’s offload to Cuthbertson went down, Huddersfield used the free play to put McIntosh over for a try in the corner. Brough added the conversion to give his side a 24-12 advantage.
A Brough drop-goal and a Roberts try added gloss to a scoreline.
