Rhinos Women’s squad revealed for 2021 season

Leeds Rhinos Women have confirmed their squad for the 2021 Women’s Betfred Super League season which starts on Sunday 18th April.

Six players have been promoted from the club’s Academy, bringing the total of Academy graduates in the 25 player squad to 14.  Ellena Powell, who made her debut in the 2019 season against Wakefield, was selected for the first team squad alongside Academy team mates Lucy Murray and Sam Hulme last year but due to the cancellation of the season the trio are now named in the squad for the first time this season.

Former Featherstone Lionesses and Oulton Raidettes player Ella Johnson and Illingworth Girls player Adaoha Akwiwu have also made the step up from the Academy and will be looking to make their mark in the competition this season.

Three new additions to the squad have come from Whitley Bay Barbarians, a club which Women’s head coach Lois Forsell has worked closely with in her role as Women and Girls Development Officer with Leeds Rhinos Foundation.  Orla McCallion, who made one appearance for the Rhinos in 2019, returns to the club and Rugby League after taking time to play Union with Darlington Mowden Park and she is joined by Barbarians team mates Sam Hulme and Zoe Hornby.

Courtney Winfield-Hill will captain the team and Hanna Butcher continues her role as vice-captain.  Fran Goldthorp who enjoyed an unforgettable debut season in 2019 with tries in the winning Challenge Cup and Grand Final has been given the number five shirt and Tara Moxon, who joined the club this year from Wakefield Trinity, has been awarded the number two shirt.

Speaking about the squad Rhinos Women’s coach Lois Forsell said: “I am really excited about the squad we have for 2021.  We have been able to keep together the majority of the squad who won the double in 2019 and have made some valuable additions.

“It is really pleasing that the majority of the additions to our squad are players who have been promoted from our Academy, which is credit to the system we have in place and the hard work of Matty Bullough and his coaching staff.

“Congratulations also to South Leeds Spartans who have their first representative in the Rhinos squad in Lucy Murray.  The Spartans are a relatively new club and are doing some outstanding work to get more girls playing the game so they should be hugely proud.  Another success story is Whitey Bay Barbarians who have three players in our squad and credit to their coach Lee Carbutt and Kevin Shanks who have played a huge role in developing the game in the area.

“It has been a long time since we played a game and the passion from our team has not faded during this challenging 12 months.  We are all excited for the competition and to get out there and defend our Super League title.

“It is unlikely I will be there for the first game of the season as I am currently on maternity leave – with my first child due this month, but I know the team are in capable hands with Anthony and David Gibbons.  They have been part of the coaching team since the club formed, they have so much knowledge and expertise and have huge respect from all the players.  I will of course be cheering on from home and hope to get back on a game day soon.”

Leeds Rhinos Women kick off their season against York City Knights on Sunday 18th April at Sports Park Weetwood, 3pm.  Please note all games are behind closed doors and spectators will not be able to attend.
