World Cup Wednesdays: Long hoping to help French revival

Each Wednesday in the build up the 2021 Rugby League World Cups, we will have a special feature as we build up to the biggest ever World Cup in the game’s history looking at those who helped create the legacy and who will be aiming to make their own history this Autumn.

Earlier this week it was announced that Leeds Rhinos assistant coach Sean Long will join up with the French national team at the end of the team as part of an impressive new look backroom team for les Chanticleers alongside former Catalans Head Coaches Laurent Frayssinous and Trent Robinson.

England international Long has been part of the Samoa coaching team for the last seven years and two World Cups in 2013 and 2017 and will come up against both teams when France take part in Pool A along with newcomers Greece.

Long believes France, who have twice previously been runners up at the World Cup, can mount a challenge come the World Cup. He commented, “France has got a great opportunity at the World Cup. Obviously Catalans will provide the majority of players but with Toulouse in the Championship along with players like Theo Fages and Gadwin Springer playing in England there is good strength too. I recently watched Carcasonne against Avignon and there was some good, entertaining rugby played. It is a tough group but if we can get our best players on the field I think we can cause some damage.”
