World Cup Wednesdays: Rhinos legend Barrie Mac looking forward to a night on terraces at World Cup

Each Wednesday in the build up the 2021 Rugby League World Cups, we will have a special feature as we build up to the biggest ever World Cup in the game’s history looking at those who helped create the legacy and who will be aiming to make their own history this Autumn.

To mark St Patrick’s Day we thought he better to speak to then former Ireland captain and Assistant Coach Barrie McDermott.

Leeds Rhinos legend Barrie McDermott spent his career at Emerald Headingley enjoying the support from the South Stand and now he says he is looking forward to being the one of the terraces cheering on the players come the end of the season when his beloved Ireland side take on Jamaica and New Zealand at Emerald Headingley in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

McDermott played for Ireland at the 2000 World Cup when he was part of the side who lost out to England at Emerald Headingley before joining Andy Kelly’s coaching staff eight years later for the World Cup in Australia.

However, come this Autumn he says he is looking forward to cheering on Stuart Littler’s side from the terraces at Emerald Headingley and he believes the Irish community in West Yorkshire will be out in force for the boys in green.
