On this Day – 14th March

ON THIS DAY in 1999 Leeds continued their journey to Wembley that year by defeating Widnes Vikings in the Challenge Cup quarter finals. In the opening round Leeds had seen off fellow Super League side Wigan Warriors and in this game they finished as comfortable 46-10 winners. Andy Hay scored his first hat trick for the club in the game and Leroy Rivett continued his impressive Cup form with another try. Marvin Golden, Brad Godden and Barrie McDermott also scored one try apiece and Kevin Sinfield added a brace of tries. Harris landed five conversions in front of a 6,375 crowd at the Halton Stadium.

The World Champions roared back to form at Headingley Carnegie with a 48-0 drubbing of Quins in a top of the table clash. No fewer than six players scored their first tries of the season with Luke Burgess scoring on his home debut and Ben Kaye crossing in the last minute to mark his debut in fine style. The Rhinos returned to Headingley Carnegie for the first time since becoming World Champions but they knew they were in for a tough battle against Super League’s second placed side. Leeds handed debuts to Ben Kaye and Simon Worrall whilst there was a home debut for Luke Burgess.

ON THIS DAY in 2010 the Rhinos suffered their third defeat of the season against Huddersfield Giants. Ryan Hall, Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow all scored for the Rhinos and Burrow added four goals but it was not enough to prevent a defeat for the Rhinos against their local rivals.

ON THIS DAY in 2014 Ben Jones-Bishop scored two tries to end Widnes Vikings’ winning start to the Super League. Jones-Bishop went over twice in six first-half minutes as the hosts led 10-0 at the interval.

Their half-time lead was extended with tries for Kallum Watkins, Ryan Bailey, Rob Burrow and Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Kevin Sinfield went over and added 10 points with the boot.
