On this Day – 3rd March

ON THIS DAY in 2000 Leeds were defeated 22-18 at home against Wakefield in their first league game of the season. Andy Hay, Jamie Mathiou and Francis Cummins all crossed for tries and Cummins added three goals, but it wasn’t enough to prevent an opening day defeat against their local rivals.

ON THIS DAY in 2001 Mark Calderwood made his debut for Leeds against London Broncos. In the first league game of the season the Rhinos racked up half a century of points with tries from Keith Senior, Tonie Carroll, Kevin Sinfield, Barrie McDermott, Iestyn Harris and Karl Pratt.

Calderwood went on to make over 90 appearances for the club, scored 60 points and was part of the 2004 Grand Final winning side.

ON THIS DAY in 2002 Andy Hay scored a sensational four tries to help the Rhinos to a massive 48-6 win in the opening game of Tetley’s Super League VII at Headingley.

It was an impressive performance by Daryl Powell’s men as they again held the opposition to just one try for the third game running. The result was made all the more impressive by the fact that Leeds lost both their first choice half backs, Ryan Sheridan and Ben Walker, in the opening 30 minutes. Sheridan has a slight hamstring strain whilst Ben Walker took a bang to the knee and neither player was risked for the remainder of the game.
