On this Day – 16th February

ON THIS DAY in 1996 Leeds Rhinos player Ash Handley was born in Leeds. The former Oulton Raiders junior who came through the Rhinos Academy to make his debut in 2014 against London Broncos. He played in the World Club Challenge in 2016 and was part of the team who won the League Leaders Shield in 2015. In 2020 he was in superb form , finishing as too try scorer for the second consecutive season and his two tries in the Challenge Cup Final helped his side to victory over Salford Red Devils.

ON THIS DAY in 2007 the Rhinos ground out an impressive 18-4 win over the previous season’s Grand Finalist Hull with tries from Lee Smith, Kevin Sinfield and Ryan Bailey.

Heavy rain fell throughout the day at Headingley Carnegie with the ground staff having to deal with over three-quarters of an inch of rain during the day on a pitch that was already heavy.

The Rhinos made the most of their early pressure to force a repeat set on the Airlie Birds. Danny McGuire put in a pin point kick to the corner and Sing had little option to dive on the loose ball.

ON THIS DAY in 2014 the Rhinos scored 28 unanswered points in the second half, including a hat trick on debut for Tom Briscoe, to kick off the new season in style with a 34-6 win over Hull KR.

Brian McDermott have Tom Briscoe a debut on his return to East Yorkshire whilst Paul Aiton had a spot on the bench to start with. Brad Singleton was rewarded for his form in pre-season with a starting spot in the front row, like Chris Clarkson packed down at loose forward.

ON THIS DAY in 2018 Leeds Rhinos lost out 38-4 to Melbourne Storm in the Downer World Club Challenge at AAMI Park but came away with credit from the clash after a committed display from the Betfred Super League champions.

Leeds Rhinos arrived at AAMI Park in Melbourne looking to re-write the record books and defeat the NRL Premiers in their own back yard.
