On this Day – 15th February

On the 15th February in 1981 the Loiners took on Hull in the first round of the Challenge Cup and in 1987 they played Barrow in the second round of the Cup.

ON THIS DAY in 1981 the Loiners took on Hull in the first round of the Challenge Cup. That season Leeds had already won the Yorkshire Cup final 8-7, but had been knocked out of the John Player Trophy in the first round and had already lost ten of their league games so far. In this game Terry Naylor was Leeds’ only try scorer and Kevin Dick added the rest of the points with a single goal, but Leeds were unable to progress to the next round and lost 14-5.

ON THIS DAY in 1987 the Loiners played Barrow in the second round of the Challenge Cup. In the first round Leeds narrowly beat Salford in a close match in which a single try from Carl Gibson was the only points in the game. This match though saw Leeds record a more convincing victory, with Mark McGaw and Andrew Ettingshausen both scoring a brace of tries. Roy Powell added the sides fifth try and Colin Maskill landed 3 goals to see the Loiners through to the next round of the cup to face Widnes with a 26-7 win.

ON THIS DAY in 2008 The Champions ran in seven first half tries to set up a 44-8 win for the Rhinos at Belle Vue. The Rhinos were denied the services of Kylie Leuluai before kick off when the giant prop was ruled out after suffering a bout of flu. That meant that Nick Scruton, who was due to play in the Reserve Academy curtain raiser, was drafted in to the starting line up for the Champions.

ON THIS DAY in 2013 Leeds Rhinos got back to winning ways after a defeat to Castleford Tigers with a workmanlike performance against Salford City Reds that saw them run in seven tries in a 42-14 win at Headingley Carnegie.

Leeds were without Jamie Peacock, Ryan Bailey and Brett Delaney but welcomed back Kylie Leuluai for his first appearance of the season.
