ON THIS DAY in 1998 Leeds Rhinos announced they had beaten off competition from Sheffield Eagles, Huddersfield and Bradford to capture the highly rated 15 year old, Chev Walker. Chev signed for Leeds after playing for Hunslet and had both City and County representative honours and had played for Hunslet and Morley schools in the Wembley Curtain Raiser in 1995.

The then Leeds Head of Youth Development, Dean Bell, said at the time: “I am delighted that Chev has agreed to join us. It says a lot for the system that we have in place that Chev turned down late attempts from other Super League clubs to sign him, particularly as they were much bigger financial offers. I think it says a lot for Chev too, in that once he had made his mind up that we were the right club he could not be swayed from his judgement. I have no doubt whatsoever that he has the ability to be a huge success in the future.”

Chev went onto be an integral part of the Rhinos success, helping them to Grand Final and World Club Challenge honours. He made 183 appearances and scored 344 points after making his debut in 1999 against Halifax.  He rejoined the club in 2017 to work on the club’s coaching staff as first team assistant coach and U19s Head Coach.
