On this Day – 18th December

On 18th December in years gone by Leeds took on Featherstone, Widnes and Bradford Northern.

ON THIS DAY in 1983 Leeds played Featherstone Rovers in the league. Leeds were coming into this game on the back of four consecutive victories, but in this game they were unable to manage anything more than a draw against their local rivals.

Terry Webb and John Holmes were try scorers and Paul Prendiville added two conversions to earn the 12-12 draw.

ON THIS DAY in 1988 Leeds were on the road to play Widnes. It was the second meeting between the sides that season, with Widnes claiming the first game at Headingley. In this match the Loiners secured their eighth win of the league campaign, thanks to tries from Cliff Lyons, John Bentley, Colin Maskill and Ray Ashton.

David Stephenson, who had been the side’s leading goal scorer all season landed two conversions to seal the 20-8 win. On this day in 1991 Leeds recorded their second win of the season over Bradford Northern. Coming into the mid way point of the season Leeds were hitting good form and had won their last six games. In this meeting at Headingley Morvin Edwards, Garry Schofield, Richard Gunn and Bobby Goulding were all try scorers and Simon Irving added the rest of the Loiners’ points in the 22-12 victory.
