Quiz of the Season: Debutants

The 2020 season has seen a number of players make their debuts for the Rhinos. In the first of our 2020 Super League end of season quizzes, test your knowledge on the players who made their first appearances in Blue and Amber this season.


1. How many players made their Leeds debuts in 2020?

Thirteen players made their first appearance during the 2020 season. Luke Gale, Kruise Leeming, Matt Prior, Alex Mellor, Bodene Thompson, Rhys Evans, Sam Walters, Jarrod O’Connor, Jack Broadbent, Corey Hall, James Harrison, Loui McConnell and Liam Tindall.

2. Which NRL club did Leeds sign Matt Prior from?

Correct! Wrong!

Prior switched from the Cronulla Sharks to join Leeds on a two year deal in 2020. The forward was an integral part of the Sharks' 2016 Grand Final winning squad and was also selected to represent New South Wales in the State Of Origin while at the Shire.

3. How many clubs has Bodene Thompson played for before signing for Leeds?

Correct! Wrong!

Before signing permanently at the Rhinos, Thompson has played for six different clubs. Starting at Gold Coast Titans in the NRL, the second rower also went on to play for Wests Tigers and New Zealand Warriors before joining Leigh Centurions in 2018. He switched to Warrington Wolves midway through the 2018 season and later helped Toronto get promoted to Super League.

4. How many goals did Jarrod O'Connor kick in his four appearances this season?

Coming through Widnes Vikings' and Leeds Rhinos' Academy systems, Jarrod O'Connor kicked two goals in his first four Super League games. He debuted against Catalans Dragons at Emerald Headingley and converted Rhys Evans' length of the field effort before he added another one against Warrington in October.

5. Which club did Kruise Leeming make his Leeds debut against?

Leeming made his full Leeds debut against his former club Huddersfield Giants when the season resumed at the start of August. Coming off the bench, the hooker made 19 tackles, two runs from dummy half and seven marker tackles as the Rhinos won 27-26 in golden point extra time.

6. How many players pulled on the Rhinos shirt for the first time against Catalans Dragons at Emerald Headingley?

Seven players were handed their debuts by Richard Agar against Catalans Dragons. Academy products Sam Walters, Jarrod O'Connor, Liam Tindall, Jack Broadbent and Loui McConnell became the latest players to progress through the club's player development pathway, whilst Featherstone Rovers loanee James Harrison and Wigan Academy signing Corey Hall also ran out at Emerald Headingley for the first time.

7. Alex Mellor scored his first Leeds try against his former club Huddersfield but what was the final score?

Mellor scored his first Rhinos try as Richard Agar's side fought back to beat the Giants 27-26 at Emerald Headingley at the start of August. As Leeds trailed 26-14 with under 10 minutes to go, Mellor's powerful drive for the line helped put the Rhinos within six points of the Giants and set up the grand stand finish, which saw Konrad Hurrell score to send the game into golden point and Luke Gale kick the winning drop goal.

8. Which community club Liam Tindall play his junior rugby at?

Winger Tindall came through local club East Leeds and joined the Rhinos Scholarship like many Leeds legends. After impressing in his debut Academy season, scoring eight tries, and Rob Burrow's reserves side, he earned a three year contract and featured three times during the 2020 season, scoring against St Helens.

9. How many combined Super League appearances did all of Leeds' 2020 debutants make?

Combined, all our 2020 debutants made a total 83 appearances throughout the Betfred Super League season. Luke Gale made the most (14), just ahead of Matt Prior (12) and Kruise Leeming, Alex Mellor and Bodene Thompson (all 10). Sam Walters and Jarrod O'Connor made the most appearances out of any academy player that featured in the League this season too (4 each).
