Leeds Rhinos Academy and Scholarship Programmes Return

The Leeds Rhinos Academy and Scholarship programmes have returned to training in recent weeks following the COVID-19 shutdown.

Staff from the Leeds Rhinos Academy have worked closely with the RFL to ensure that the Academy and Scholarship programmes can return safely, whilst making sure the club continues to develop players for the future.

The Academy sees a new structure for 2021, with the return of U19 and suspension of the Reserves competition. Academy Head Coach Chev Walker introduced a new group of U17s on Tuesday 20^th October to his Academy team, with 13 players progressing from last year’s U16s Scholarship. 

The Scholarship will continue with players at U16 and U15 in 2021. The U16s were the first to return to training on Monday 19^th October following the COVID-19 shutdown. The new intake of U15, identified and recruited by Simon Bell (Head of Academy Recruitment & Operations) and Barry Evans (Junior Rugby Scout), started training on Monday at the Leeds Rugby Academy at Kirkstall for their first training session at Leeds Rhinos, led by Scholarship Head Coach Mark Butterill with ex-Leeds Rhinos player Brett Delaney also offering his expertise to the young players.

This is their first step on the Leeds Rhinos player development pathway, which has consistently produced first team players for the club over the years.
