On This Day – 23rd October

ON THIS DAY in 1968 Leeds played Hull KR at home. This was the second meeting between the sides that season, with Leeds claiming their first win of the campaign against Hull KR back in August. In the game prior to this Leeds had suffered only their second defeat of the season against St Helens, but in this fixture the team put this disappointment behind them with a convincing win.

Alan Smith and David Hick both scored a brace of tries each and Mick Shoebottom and Albert Eyre scored one each. Bev Risman converted all six tries to ensure Leeds were the 30-12 victors.

ON THIS DAY in 1988 Leeds played Hull KR in the league once again. The Loiners were coming into the game on the back of a Yorkshire Cup final victory against Castleford at Elland Road. They had already played six times in the league and had lost only twice to Hull and Widnes.

In this match Garry Schofield scored his eighth try in four games and Andrew Ettinghausen, Mark Brooke-Cowden and Colin Maskill all scored one apiece. David Stephenson kicked 2 goals and Ray Ashton landed a drop goal to see Leeds win 21-8.
