ON THIS DAY in 1973 Leeds defeated Dewsbury 36-9 to win the Yorkshire Cup Final at Odsal. Leeds heeled from only four scrums in the entire match, yet scored eight tries, seven of them by backs, including three by Holmes, to crush Dewsbury by 36 points to 9.

The Leeds team was: Holmes: A. Smith, Hynes, Dyl, Atkinson; Hardisty, Hepworth (Langley); Clawson (Fisher), D. Ward, Ramsey, Cookson, Eccles, Batten.

ON THIS DAY in 1989 former Rhinos player Trent Merrin was born. The Australian international joined the Rhinos in 2019 from Penrith Panthers. He made 28 appearances and went onto captain the club, but returned home for their 2020 season to join St George Illawarra.

ON THIS DAY in 2017 the Rhinos beat Castleford 24-6 in the Super League Grand Final.

Old Trafford arrived with its traditional Grand Final night down pour but that could not dampen the excitement from both sets of fans as a full house erupted when the teams took the field.
