Flashback: Five Top Super League Meetings vs Catalans Dragons
The Rhinos return to Emerald Headingley this Wednesday to take on Catalans Dragons in round 14 of the Betfred Super League. Take a look back at some classic clashes against the Dragons:
Future Catalans player Brent Webb tormented the Dragons on their second ever visit to Headingley in 2007; the full back running three tries passed the French outfit. Kevin Sinfield also recorded 26 points on the day, kicking nine goals and scoring two tries as the Rhinos came away 54-8 winners.
As the Rhinos prepared for a World Club Challenge matchup with Melbourne Storm, Brian McClennan’s side disposed of Catalans 34-4 at Emerald Headingley. Scott Donald and Keith Senior both scored two tries a piece while Danny McGuire, Ali Lauitiiti and Ian Kirke also crossed the whitewash as the Rhinos went into their World Club fight on a high.
A dramatic last minute penalty made this one of the most memorable fixtures between the Rhinos and Dragons.
In a closely fought contest with tries from Ryan Hall, Ben Jones-Bishop, Josh Walters, Carl Ablett and Joel Moon, the Dragons looked like they were heading for victory after a late Morgan Escare drop goal, but then Liam Sutcliffe stepped up to make a pressure kick in the final minute….
Tom Briscoe returned to Leeds’ starting lineup following a shoulder injury to score three times against Catalans in a 36-22 win in 2015. The winger finished off three swift moves to finish in the corner every time, while centre partner Kallum Watkins also got on the scoresheet. Mitch Garbutt scored his first try in Leeds colours while Brett Delaney took a pass back inside from Briscoe to score Leeds’ fifth of the afternoon.
Rhyse Martin’s ‘Try of the Season’ break away try stole the headlines as the Rhinos recorded a second win over the Dragons in 2019. The second rower finished the game with 24 points (10 goals and 1 try) while free scoring winger Ash Handley extended his season tally with two tries on the wing.
