On this Day – 28th September

ON THIS DAY in 1963 club legend Mick Clark made his debut and Leeds suffered their third straight defeat of the season at the hands of Swinton. That month the side had lost to Wigan and Hunslet in the league and had been knocked out of the Yorkshire Cup by Featherstone.

Lewis Jones was the only man to score in the game for Leeds, scoring 3 goals, but the final score ended 14-6 to Swinton.

ON THIS DAY in 1968 Leeds faced Leigh for the second time that season.  The sides had played each other on the opening day of the season and Leigh had that day been the winners, but since then Leeds had gone on to win their five subsequent games and had drawn their last fixture against Wakefield prior to this match.

Leeds had also beaten Hull and Featherstone in the Yorkshire Cup that month, a competition they went on to win that year. John Langley scored two tries for Leeds in this game and Mick Joyce, Ray Batten, Mick Clark and Alan Smith all scored a try each. Syd Hynes added four goals and Bev Risman kicked another three to give Leeds a 32-13 win.

ON THIS DAY in 1957 Leeds travelled to Thrum Hall to play Halifax. It was Leeds’ fifth game that month, having already played St Helens, Wigan and Widnes in the league and then Castleford in the Yorkshire Cup. They had won three of those games but on this occasion were defeated by their Yorkshire rivals. Despite having achieved two big scores earlier in the league – 68-6 over Blackpool and 52-12 over Barrow, in this game Leeds were unable to score a single point and lost the game 32-0.

ON THIS DAY in 2003 the Leeds Rhinos Academy beat St Helens in the Academy Grand Final at Headingley.

The team were captained by Scott Murrell and Jason Golden and Lee Smith both scored tries to secure the win.

ON THIS DAY in 2008 the Rhinos lost 10-8 to St Helens at Knowsley Road despite dominating the second half. The Rhinos were hoping good things did come in threes as they headed to Knowsley Road looking to beat Saints for the third time this season. However, it was the home side who made it third time lucky.
