Former Rhinos hero Ellis leads Hull FC fundraising charge for Rob Burrow

Leeds Rhinos’ Betfred Super League rivals Hull FC have once again proved how special the Rugby League family is with the launch of a limited edition shirt to raise funds in support of Rob Burrow.

15 years to the day of their historic Challenge Cup Final win against Leeds Rhinos, Hull FC have launched a special edition, cup inspired third shirt – including a special gesture for 2005 runner-up Rob Burrow!

A remake of the shirt worn in the historic 25-24 victory over Leeds Rhinos at the Millennium Stadium will be worn in this year’s Coral Challenge Cup when the Airlie Bird’s face Castleford Tigers.

A popular shirt design ever since, the special edition remake includes the names of all 17 players who pulled on the shirt that day, as well as a classy imprint of the iconic silver feather pattern from the Challenge Cup trophy.

The new Hull FC jersey also boasts one of the sports’s most high-profile shirt sponsors, Jacuzzi®, the first of a number of exciting announcements expected by both parties over the coming months.

In an extra special touch, the club can confirm that £5 from every limited edition jersey sold will be donated to the Rob Burrow fund to help him and his family with their ongoing fight against Motor Neurone Disease.

Burrow featured for the Rhinos on that day back in 2005 earning a runners-up medal alongside two-time Hull FC Challenge Cup winning captain and friend, Gareth Ellis, who also played for Leeds that day.

The club wanted to recognise Rob Burrow’s fantastic contribution to the sport and support him and his family during their ongoing health battle, having originally planned to wear the special edition shirt against Leeds Rhinos at Magic Weekend – before it was postponed due to Covid-19.

However, the shirt, the anniversary and the chance to support one of the game’s greatest ever players was an opportunity that was too important to be missed.

Speaking about the launch, Hull FC legend Gareth Ellis said:

“The shirt design has become iconic for Hull FC fans given the great players who pulled on the shirt for the 2005 season.

“It was then cemented in Hull FC history with victory in the Challenge Cup Final played at Cardiff which was Hull FC’s first major trophy in the Super League era.

“That day I was on the opposing team playing for Leeds Rhinos alongside good friend and team mate Rob Burrow.

“While we would have both been disappointed after the final whistle, nothing could keep Rob down for long and he was always the one to put a smile on everyone’s faces, either with his relentless banter with Barrie McDermott and Keith Senior, or a practical joke at the expense of the team.

“It’s no surprise to me to see the courage and attitude he’s shown during these tough times for him and his family – he’s tackling it with everything that made him the great player he was and the great person he is; tough and resilient and with a smile on his face.

“It’s been fantastic to see the rugby league community get behind Rob since his diagnosis with MND as they so often do whenever they are called upon.”

Ellis continued, “This is a fantastic gesture from our club. It’s an opportunity for Hull FC fans to celebrate a special day in Cardiff, but also support one of the games greatest ever players who shared the field that day. I am privileged to know him as a team mate, an opponent and a friend.”

Meanwhile, Jacuzzi® have also gone the extra mile in support of the Burrow family, providing them with a new hot tub at their family home.

The new special edition jerseys are available in sizes S to 7XL in men’s sizes, and 8-18 in ladies sizes priced at £49.99, while junior editions of the shirt are also available at £39.99.

The anniversarycan be bought online at right now, and will be available to buy in person from the club’s city centre retail store from 10am on Friday morning.
