On this Day – 30th July

On this day in 1910, the Northern Union played the final game of their historic tour to Australia and New Zealand.

The game was played at the Domain Cricket Ground in Auckland with the tourists finishing in style with a 52-20 win. The Lions team included Leeds star Fred Webster in the front row.

In 1932, England played their first of three Tests in New Zealand. Having captured the Ashes in Australia with a Third Test win, the Lions headed across the Tasman in fine spirits and got off to a perfect start with a 24-9 win at Carlaw Park in Auckland.

Leeds star Stan Smith crossed for the final try of the game to complete a dominant second half performance. He was joined in the side by club team mates Joe Thompson and John Lowe, the latter making his international debut.

In 2000, Leeds Rhinos travelled to Odsal to face Bradford Bulls and came away with a memorable 28-26 win.

Dean Lance’s side had lost to the Bulls in the Challenge Cup Final earlier in the season and had been beaten 44-2 at home in the league but they reversed their fortunes on a memorable night.

The Rhinos tries came from Keith Senior, with two, and one each for Adrian Morley and Francis Cummins.

In 2006 Leeds suffered a devastating defeat to Huddersfield Giants in the Challenge Cup semi final. Leeds were aiming to get back to the Challenge Cup Final, having lost to Hull in Cardiff the previous year, but they were defeated by a determined Giants outfit at Odsal, losing 30-12.

On this day in 2010 the Rhinos welcomed Wigan to Headingley but lost out 26-12.

Thomas Leuluai took Darrell Goulding’s kick to open the scoring, with George Carmont extending Wigan’s lead.

Chris Clarkson forced over before half-time and Leeds drew level early in the second half when Kevin Sinfield crossed after Andy Coley was sin-binned.

But two Pat Richards penalties either side of tries from Harrison Hansen and Martin Gleeson put Wigan out of sight.

Back in 2012 the Rhinos travelled to Belle Vue to face Wakefield Trinity and suffered a disappointing 38-18 defeat despite a second half hat trick from Ryan Hall.

First-half tries from Andy Raleigh, Paul Sykes, who kicked five goals, and Danny Kirmond set them on their way.

And, after Hall’s second-half hat-trick added to Kallum Watkins’ first-half Leeds try, Danny Washbrook, Kyle Wood, Dean Collis and Peter Fox crossed too.
