Loan Watch: Emerging Rhinos star in Championship wins
Championship - Featherstone v Toulouse - Saturday 7 September
Last weekend, a number of young Rhinos gained game time on loan or on dual registration at Betfred Championship sides Featherstone Rovers and Batley Bulldogs. Following last week’s agreement between the three clubs that a small number of the Batley and Featherstone players will get the opportunity to play for Rob Burrow’s new Reserve squad, rising stars within the Leeds club will also get the opportunity to gain experience in the second tier.
In the Peter Fox Memorial Trophy match between Featherstone and Bradford Bulls, four Rhinos players ran out for James Webster’s side in the 30-22 win. Callum McLelland played 12 times last season to help Rovers to the Play Off final and made his second appearance of the new season against the Bulls, scoring the opening try of the game.
Prop Tom Holroyd had never played on dual registration since signing a first team contract with Leeds but got his first start at the weekend, playing alongside former team mate Brett Ferres in the pack.
Academy youngster Jarrod O’Connor was included on the bench having started in two of Featherstone’s pre season fixtures, scoring once against Hull KR. He also played in the season opener against Batley.
Papua New Guinea international Wellington Albert joined O’Connor on the bench. The prop, who spent time on loan with the Rovers in 2019 and signed another loan deal to stay at the club for 2020, has featured in both opening games for James Webster so far this season.
Elsewhere, forward Tyler Dupree got his first run out for Batley Bulldogs after signing on a month loan deal. Following successful spells for Jack Broadbent and Sam Walters at the club last year, Dupree made his first appearance off the bench in the 20-10 win against Swinton Lions
