Flashback: 5 Top Super League Meetings vs Salford Red Devils
Ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Salford Red Devils at the AJ Bell here is a look back at some key Super League meetings against the Red Devils since 1997.
Leeds first played Salford in Super League in 1997, winning 33-20 thanks to two tries from Phil Hassan and Paul Sterling. Sterling got the scoring underway, picking up a short pass from Richie Blackmore to dot down in the corner, before touching down again, this time from a cross field kick by Iestyn Harris. Harris grabbed a try of his own at the end of the first half before Hassan’s double, plus a score from Ryan Sheridan, ended the game.
Winger Mark Calderwood recorded his first hat trick of the 2002 season in round nine against Salford. Coming off the back of a four point defeat to Widnes, Leeds were back on top form, running out to a 18-0 lead inside of twenty minutes thanks to tries from Jamie Jones-Buchanan and two from Marcus St Hilaire. Jason Nicol pulled a score back for the home side but tries from Francis Cummins, Rob Burrow and Calderwood’s hat trick sealed the two points for the Rhinos.
Leeds recorded their biggest Super League win at Salford in 2012. Played at The Willows, Kevin Sinfield became Leeds’ leading points scorer of all time in the 56-16 victory, scoring a try and kicking six goals. Zak Hardaker also stole the show, scoring a hat trick, while Brett Delaney, Rob Burrow, Carl Ablett, Danny McGuire, Kallum Watkins and Liam Hood also crossed the whitewash to help Leeds to their fifth win of the season.
In Leeds’ treble winning season, two tries from prop Jamie Peacock helped the Rhinos to a 28-18 result over Salford. Having only lost one match leading up to the round ten clash, the visitors showed their class; Peacock crashing over early on. Lami Tasi and Niall Evalds replied for the Red Devils before the Leeds prop was over for his second, levelling the scores up. Ash Handley, Rob Burrow and Zak Hardaker soon took the game beyond the home side, taking Leeds to their ninth win of the season.
Last year, Jack Walker grabbed a hat trick against the Red Devils to help Leeds claim their first points of the season. Konrad Hurrell also scored a brace as part of the eight try demolition, which also included tries from Adam Cuthbertson, Matt Parcell and Ash Handley.
