Double header will be a great occasion says Agar

Leeds Rhinos head coach Richard Agar said the double header that will kick off his team’s 2020 Betfred Super League season at Emerald Headingley will be a great occasion for players and fans.

The season opener will see Toronto Wolfpack make their eagerly-anticipated Betfred Super League debut against Castleford Tigers in the first ever Super League double header on February 2, kick 2:30pm followed by the Rhinos’ game against Hull FC at 4.45pm.

“It’s a great way to start the season with a double header at Emerald Headingley,” said Agar.  “With Toronto playing their first Super League game it will add to the occasion.  Hull will be a great challenge for us.  They have brought in some new players who will add power to their game.  It will be a good opportunity to for our players to start the season in front of a home crowd and for the new players to experience what it is like to play at Emerald Headingley.

“It’s exciting that we will be playing at different grounds this year.  Our loop fixture against Catalans will see us play in another double header at the Stade Ernest-Wallon in Toulouse, which is another iconic sporting venue and that always adds to the experience for players and fans.  We are also looking forward to travelling to Toronto in August for the first time.”

The majority of the Rhinos squad were back in for pre-season this Monday and Agar said the players are in good spirits and ready to get preparations underway.

“We have let the players kick off the start of pre-season,” he said.  “We started the week back with a meeting where we looked at some of the stats from last season and the improvements we made.  We split the review into two halves and looked at the first and second half of the season and where we made progress, particularly in defence.  The aim was to look at what we do well and how and where we can improve and execute better.

“We explained the rational behind these early training sessions and the structure of pre-season and it is important that the players have empowerment and they set the standards and have accountability.”
