Match Report: Leeds Rhinos Women’s Academy 24 Bradford Bulls Women’s Academy 12
Leeds Rhinos Women’s Academy finished their season with a 24-12 win over local rivals at Stanningley.
The Rhinos started the game at a good intensity, and applied pressure to the Bulls attack early doors at Staninngley on Wednesday evening.
Abby Cromack opened the scoring with her first try for the Academy. A kick on the last tackle saw the ball spilled by the Bulls in the in-goal area and Cromack pounced on the loose ball to touch the ball down.
The Academy soaked up pressure in defence towards the end of the first half defending back to back sets. The reward for that defence was Ellena Powell running a great line and receiving the ball in space from Abby Cromack and scoring for the Rhinos.
The Bulls hit back with a Millie Taylor try just before halftime to make the score 16-8 to the Rhinos Women’s Academy.
Matty Bullough praised his team for their start and efforts in the first half but asked for them to be more direct in the second half.
The Rhinos opened the scoring with a great cut out pass from Cromack to Liv Paddy who crossed the line in the corner, this shortly followed by Lucy Murray crashing over the line which was just reward for her direct running all evening.
Bradford Bulls Women’s Academy hit back however through half back Chloe Wainwright-Morley who had been busy all evening.
Leeds defended well and managed to keep the Bulls to only one score in the second half and finished the game exceptionally with Ellena Powell slicing through the Bulls defence with a well-timed pass from Sam Hulme and racing 40 metres to score.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Matty Bullough said: “We have spoken a lot over the past month about being more dominant in defence and direct in our attack as last time out against the Bulls Women’s Academy we came off second best in both areas. However the girls were fantastic tonight they were much more direct and controlled the ruck better in defence which allowed us to get on the front foot more in the game.
“The result is just reward for the girls efforts and hard work in training to fix up these areas and finish the season with a win.”
