Five Classic Clashes vs Hull FC

On Sunday afternoon, Leeds Rhinos will look to continue an eleven year winning streak over Hull FC in the league when the two sides meet in round 23 of the Befred Super League.

Since the east coast side first entered the competition in 1998, both Leeds and Hull have produced memorable matches at Emerald Headingley, with Leeds holding a dominant record with 20 wins.

Here are five of the best clashes against Hull in the Super League era:

1998 – Leeds Rhinos 38 Hull Sharks 18

In 1998, when the Black and Whites were formally Hull Sharks, Leeds gained revenge from an early season defeat against Peter Walsh’s side to win 38-18 on home soil. Forward Adrian Morley and winger Paul Sterling both scored twice for Leeds, with Iestyn Harris and Leroy Rivett also crossing in front of over 11,000 fans at Headingley.

2009 – Leeds Rhinos 46 Hull FC 16

In round 14 of the 2009 season, Leeds posted one of their highest scorelines against Hull FC at Emerald Headingley, running 46 points past the Airlie Birds. Centres Lee Smith and Keith Senior both scored twice for the rampant Rhinos, with Brent Webb, Carl Ablett, Ryan Hall and Kevin Sinfield adding to the home sides scoreline. The Rhinos would remain third in the league, later winning the League Leaders Shield at the conclusion of the season.

2011 – Leeds Rhinos 42 Hull FC 10

In the 2011 play offs, Hull FC were blown away by the Rhinos, who were coming off the back of two big wins. There were seven different try scorers for Brian McDermott’s side, with Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Ryan Bailey and Brent Webb among the scorers in a 42-10 victory. It would be the Rhinos’ last home game before the Grand Final as they beat Huddersfield and Warrington away prior to their Grand Final showdown with St Helens.

2012 – Leeds Rhinos 21 Hull FC 6

Both sides also met on Armed Forces Day in 2012, with the Rhinos coming out victorious once again. In the wet conditions, tries from Carl Ablett, Brett Delaney and Ryan Hall, plus a drop goal from Kevin Sinfield, helped the Rhinos stay fifth in the league. Richard Horne scored the consolation try for the visitors, who suffered a seventh loss of the season.

2017 – Leeds Rhinos 18 Hull FC 16

Two years ago, Leeds beat the Black and Whites to reach a tenth Super League Grand Final. Stevie Ward and Anthony Mullally gave the home side the lead before former Rhino Gareth Ellis, Mahe Fonua and Jake Connor put Hull in control. It would take a late surge from Liam Sutcliffe to win the game for Leeds, taking the Rhinos back to Old Trafford.
