Emerald Headingley to host the Emergency Services Cup

West Yorkshire Police will take on West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service here at Emerald Headingley Stadium on Friday 12th July where the two rugby league teams will battle it out to win the Emergency Services Cup. Kicking off at 5:30pm the Emergency Services Cup will be a curtain raiser prior to Leeds Rhinos Betfred Super League fixture v Hull KR.

Representatives from both teams met recently at a joint photoshoot and it was already clear what’s at stake with both teams keen to get their hands on the Cup. West Yorkshire Police have had a competitive team within their sports and social club for many years but sadly the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service team had disbanded a few years ago, but with the help of Leeds Rhinos the troupes have been rallied and within weeks of an initial meeting over 20 active firefighters began training for the chance to play on the iconic Headingley pitch.

Speaking today Rob Hart, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service head coach and Watch Commander said: “We’re delighted at the chance to play at the home of Leeds Rhinos. From the initial idea we’ve had an amazing response from our work force and very quickly we’ve now got a bunch of dedicated guys who can’t wait to pull on our jersey and take on our old on pitch rivals West Yorkshire Police. The opportunity to play this match at Emerald Headingley is just fantastic and we hope to see plenty of our colleagues, friends and family, and of course the Rhinos fans, there on the night supporting us.”

Adam Newton, West Yorkshire Police head coach and Detective Constable, Protective Services Crime Department said: “When the Rhinos approached us with the opportunity for our team to play at Headingley we jumped at the chance. I’m a season ticket holder and I can’t wait to be involved in this match. It’s great to see the fire service resurrect rugby league in their ranks and we’re really looking forward to having the opportunity to take to the field with them. All our boys are fired up and we really want to get our hands on that trophy!”
