The derby is back!
The derby match is back! Leeds Rhinos are heading back to Odsal to take on Bradford Bulls and you can be there to see one the biggest rivalries in the sport re-ignited.
Twenty years ago, over 24,000 fans were packed into Odsal when the two sides met and they meet again on Saturday 11thMay in the Sixth Round of the Coral Challenge Cup at Odsal Stadium.
Two decades ago, the two sides also met in the Challenge Cup semi final as Leeds booked their place at Wembley on their way to winning the famous old trophy and Dave Furner’s side will be hoping to take one step closer to Wembley when they face the Bulls.
Tickets for the game are just £18 for adults if you purchase before midnight on 10thMay and just £5 for juniors.
The rivalry is reignited for the first time since 2014 with both sides facing off in the sixth-round clash – the contest being screened LIVE on BBC One (kick-off: 2:30pm).
It is the first Challenge Cup fixture between the two teams in 16 years – when Bradford Bulls won a 22-20 thriller at the Millennium Stadium.
Robbie Hunter-Paul won three Super League titles during his time at the Bradford Bulls and also won two Challenge Cup finals against the Rhinos in 2000 and 2003.
The former Bradford player has hailed the return of a ‘great sporting rivalry’, with an intense atmosphere making it the ‘Biggest Rugby League Derby. On The Planet’!
“Back when I was playing it was the first fixture you looked for on the fixture list and for some people it was the only fixture,” said Hunter-Paul.
“It was a game that was massive for everyone, players, fans, everyone associated with the club – it often split households straight down the middle.
“We had such intense battles in finals but the games that stand out to me were when the stands were packed out at Odsal and Headingley.
“It is a true great sporting rivalry with an intense atmosphere that made it the biggest Rugby League derby in the world and I am really looking forward to it reigniting on May 11th.”
