Beevers excited for Army test

Last season, Caitlin Beevers was one of the clubs stand out players. A Grand Final try, an England call and being named young player of the year were just a couple of the full back’s highlights, and off the back of a 42-0 preseason win over York at the start of the month, Beevers is eager to face the Army back at Weetwood this Sunday.

“I’m very excited to be fair,” commented Beevers. “To say that we had our first friendly against York a few weeks ago, it will give us the opportunity to try out new moves and get used to how we all play again. I think the game will be a great test for me and the girls because it will be different from last season’s challenge cup match. We’ve got fixed shirts this season so we each know our roles in the match and what we need to work on individually. Sunday’s game against the Army will be a great platform for us to do this.”

Beevers scored a hat trick against the Army in the Challenge Cup, which the Rhinos went on to win. Despite the 46-10 score line, she is wary of the threats that Sunday’s opponent holds. “They’re tough, very strong and good in contact. I think that we had the speed at the end of that game last season to get the win, so going into this one, we can’t take anything for granted.”

The squad also visited the Catterick army barracks as part of their preseason schedule and Beevers really felt the benefits of the trip to North Yorkshire. “Going out to the Catterick army base as part of our pre-season was really tough actually! You could see why they are so strong and physical with the drills that we did and it shows that, when it comes to a game situation, we need to be on top throughout.”

The match will mark the return of Adam Cuthbertson’s side to Sports Park Weetwood, which had proved a fortress in 2018, with Beevers hoping for the same success in 2019. “It will be great to be back at Weetwood, the facilities are excellent. They really look after us and the pitch is great. We had plenty of success on that pitch last season and hopefully when the season gets started, we can produce the same sort of performances again.”
