Calderwood delighted to see former team mate back in Super League

Leed's Mark Calderwood hits the deck to score before Widnes' Chris Giles can stop him

Leeds Rhinos Grand Final winner Mark Calderwood says he is delighted to see his former roommate Danny Ward back in Super League ahead of the former prop returning to Emerald Headingley on Friday night with his London Broncos side.

Calderwood was a team mate of Ward at Leeds and London and he says Ward has forged a team in his own image. Speaking to the Rhinos official matchday magazine, Blue & Amber, as part of a new series this season called ‘Where are they now?’ Calderwood has revealed his thoughts on Ward.

“I’m really glad the Broncos are back up there in Super League,” he says, home from a day working with Evolve Construction.

“I really want them to do well, especially with Wardy at the helm. We roomed together down there in the capital, and he is a genuinely funny man with one of the weirdest senses of humour I know.

“The way London play is the image of him, no big stars, getting the best out of everyone for the common cause and surviving on spirit and togetherness; that’s Wardy.”

Calderwood is also backing his former Leeds team mate who will be in the opposite dugout to Ward; Dave Furner. The winger believes Furner is the man to bring back the good times at Emerald Headingley.

He added, “Furns was massive for us when he arrived from Wigan, you’ll have heard others say it, but the complete professional in everything he did, someone to look up to who played it tough, and that rubbed off on us.

“The Leeds team might be having it tough at the moment but he’s the guy to turn it around, he just needs time.”
