Ahead of their first Women’s Super League game this Sunday Leeds Rhinos Women have promoted three players from the Under-19s Academy.

Caitlin Beevers, who previously played for Dewsbury Moor, Frankie Townend who joined from Oulton Raiders and Kacy Haley who played for Huddersfield St Joes have all been elevated to the Women’s squad and could be in the mix to make their debut in Sunday’s game.

Seven players from the Academy were invited to train with the first team squad as recognition for their great start and hard work in the Under-19s academy programme and to expose them to the next level of training.

All the players were fantastic and benefited from their experience training with the women’s squad and all fitted in well to the training sessions. Under-19s head coach, Matty Bullough, has seen the benefits in the Under-19s training with the players who have been training with the Women’s squad.

“The girls have really increased the intensity and tempo of our sessions and have stepped up as leaders within the sessions,” Bullough said. “It has certainly boosted their confidence and given them a great insight of what we are striving to achieve.”

The three players who have signed for the women’s team for 2018 were part of head coach Adam Cuthbertson’s 20 player squad for the pre-season friendly against Castleford Tigers Ladies in March.

Leon Crick, Rugby League Development Manager for Leeds Rhinos Foundation said: “This is great news for our Academy that three players have been selected for the Women’s squad and shows our development programme is already working.

“The Leeds Rhinos Women team is not only about competing in Super League it’s also about developing new players and attracting more women and girls to play rugby league.”

Starting on Monday 23rd April, Leeds Rhinos Foundation will launch their Leeds Rhinos Women’s Uner-16s – 19s Player Development Programme.

The programme will focus on the development of players in school years 10, 11 and up to the age of 19 years old. The players will be coached by Leeds Rhinos Women coaches and meet players from the Women’s squad who will be encouraging the girls and passing on their knowledge to the young and upcoming players.

On the back of three Under-19s players graduating to the Women’s squad for 2018 we will be looking to recruit new academy members for the Leeds Rhinos Under-19s Academy and our Player Development Programme is a great way to do that.

The dates for the Player Development programme are:

Monday 23rd April at East Leeds Rugby Club
Monday 21st May at West Leeds Sports and Social Club
Monday 25th June at Shawcross Rugby Club
Monday 16th July at Stanningley Rugby Club
Monday 13th August at Oulton Raiders Rugby Club
Monday 8th October at East Leeds Rugby Club
