Tickets in hot demand for new Leeds Rhinos movie
Tickets are selling fast for the official screenings of the film that tells the inside story of the 2015 Treble winning season with the Premiere and the first night of public screening now sold out. However, there are three more screenings still available so book now to avoid disappointment.
As Good As It Gets? is a feature-length documentary about Leeds Rhinos, premiering at Leeds International Festival. It is a story of sacrifice, glory and the agonising pursuit of a legacy. The film stars Kevin Sinfield, Jamie Peacock, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Brian McDermott, Gary Hetherington and more; it is narrated by actor Matthew Lewis.
The documentary has been in production for nearly two years and is the brainchild of Rhinos star Jamie Jones-Buchanan and his partners at RugbyAM and The City Talking. The film is produced by The City Talking in association with the Age Partnership, and comes from the same stable that created the critically acclaimed ‘Do You Want To Win?’ which told the story of the last Leeds United Championship winning side of 1992. That film was part of Leeds International Festival ’17 and the premiere was attended by amongst others former Leeds United star turned Hollywood actor Vinnie Jones.
The title for the film comes from a phrase Brian McDermott uses with his players to encourage them to enjoy the moment and take opportunities when they present themselves.
As CEO of the Leeds-based media company The City Talking, Lee Hicken has now taken it upon himself to document the Golden Age of Leeds Rhinos with this film. “Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Alex Simmonds came to the premiere of our Leeds United film, loved it, and suggested we should do one for the Rhinos. I met them a day or two after. There were no plans to make a rugby film after ‘Do You Want To Win?’.
“Only Jamie could make it work from a cast point of view, he could make all the right introductions. Thankfully, he’s amazing. He’s so articulate and a great storyteller.
“Brian McDermott was the first interview we did. I’d never met him before and only seen him on the telly so thought it was going to go one of two ways: either he’s going to be really open or he could just stonewall it. He was brilliant; really honest and another good storyteller. He has got a lot of perspective on sport and life in general.
“What they’ve achieved, and to do it with a core of people either from Leeds or who support Leeds, it just doesn’t happen. It won’t happen at Leeds again, I don’t think; that was a once in a lifetime squad.”
Commenting on the documentary Jamie Jones-Buchanan said, “Sport has a unique power to inspire and enthrall the public’s imagination. 2015 was an incredible year for us as we said goodbye to three legends, won every trophy available and elevated Rugby League to a new level with Kevin Sinfield’s fantastic achievement at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. But those huge public occasions are just part of the story and this film reveals for the first time all the sacrifices and decisions that allowed history to be made.”
