Leeds Rhinos Women’s team have revealed their first Under-19s Academy squad who will be coached by new head coach, Matty Bullough.

The squad of 20 will train once a week, with a focus on athletic and player development.  The players will also continue to represent their community clubs whilst also being involved in the Leeds Rhinos Women’s programme.

Bullough, who has previously coached Yorkshire Under-16s, Oulton Open Age and has been Assistant and Head Coach of the England Lionesses said he is proud to be named as the Academy’s Head Coach.

“I am thrilled to join the coaching staff of the Leeds Rhinos Women’s team,” said Bullough.  “This is an exciting time for Women’s sport and having been involved in the game in Leeds for many years, I know there are some talented youngsters coming through and it will be great to be part of their development.

“The players will continue to represent their own community clubs, so this will provide them with a good balance of training and playing at a community level but also being involved in a performance programme with the Rhinos.”

Many of the girls who have been selected for the Academy have been coached by Leeds Rhinos Foundation in their schools or clubs and for the charity’s Women and Girls Development Officer, Lois Forsell, who will be playing in the Rhinos Women’s first team, this is a real success story for Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Rugby League Development Plan, which is supported by Mears.

“It’s fantastic to see so many of the girls like Chloe Kerrigan, Emily Johnstone, Jess Crockford, Katie Costello, Mia Clarke, Frankie Townend and Paige Webster, who I have coached in the community, continuing to play the game and getting the chance to represent the Rhinos,” said Lois.

“The women and girls game is growing and I believe that the Rhinos Women’s team will create more opportunities and inspire more girls to get involved in playing.

“The Leeds Rhinos Under-19s open trials were excellent and the standard at the trials was very high and as such we know there will always be players developing and progressing throughout the season who were not included in the initial U19s Academy Squad selection. We will be looking at working with these players further and aiming to support them with their progression and developments throughout the year and therefore will be running Leeds Rhinos Women Development Sessions open for any players aged 16-19.”

Any players who would like to take part in the 16-19s development sessions please contact lois.forsell@leedsrhinosfoundation.org
