37. Australia win on Christmas Day

Whilst Leeds had broken new ground in 1907 when they were part of the historic tour by the New Zealand All Golds, their first meeting with an Australian side came on Christmas Day 1908.

The Australians had drawn the first Test against the Northern Union on 12th December at Park Royal, London. But a clash with major Rugby Union and football fixtures that day meant only 2,200 people were in attendance, and the tourists share of the gate did not even cover the cost of travelling to London for the game. They then travelled to Wales to face Treherbert before playing Wakefield at Belle Vue, which were both in front of small crowds as well.

Headingley however proved a different story as the stadium, which had hosted the first Test against the All Golds the previous year, drew in a crowd of 12,000. That was the second biggest crowd of the entire tour and only surpassed by the 22,000 at the second test at Newcastle’s St James’ Park.

Within fifteen minutes the Tourists held an eight points lead through two tries by Devereux, one of which he converted. Then Leeds got into their stride, and following excellent passing Oliver scored well out on the left, for Young to convert with a magnificent kick. The game was now going from end to end at a tremendous pace. Unconverted tries by Walsh (Australia) and R. Ward made the interval score 11-8 in the Tourists’ favour. Early in the second half Young kicked a penalty goal, but a determined Colonial forward rush led to a try by Pearce. In the last twenty minutes Leeds tried desperately hard but they were dogged by misfortune: on four occasions players scored but were called back for infringements. The game finished in drama as when fans stormed the pitch to remonstrate with referee EH Smirk. Swift police intervention ensured the official made it to the dressing rooms as the visitors recorded a 14-10 win and were rewarded with a gate of £300 compared to just £40 for the first Test.  The teams were:

Leeds: Young; Oliver, Thomas, Ware, Desborough; R. Jones, R. Ward; Webster, Harrison, Whitaker, lbbltson, Jukes, Townend

Australia: Bolewski; Rosenfeld, Devereux, Deane, Heidke; Butler, Halloway; O’Malley, Bevidon, Pearce, Hennessey, Courtney, Walsh. (Messenger was unable to play because of injury).
