As we count down to the World Club Challenge against Melbourne Storm on Friday 16th February, we are counting down each day with 50 of the most memorable moments for the club against Australian sides down the years from Kangaroos to Cowboys.

38. Vest and Brown sent off in 1921 clash

Down the years, there has been a history of tempers flaring when we clash with Australian sides and that dates back to one of the first ever meetings back in 1921.

The game had been a stop start affair with the tourists being heavily penalised throughout and frustrations boiled over when Australian centre Dick Vest and Leeds scrum half Archie Brown, who had joined the club that summer from Newport, were both sent off after they traded punches late on.

Vest had played for New South Wales in 1919 and made his Test debut on the tour to New Zealand that same year, scoring two tries in Australia’s fourth test win. He played in three Tests in the Ashes victory over England in 1920 and toured with the Kangaroos the following year. Including the game against Leeds, he played in 23 games on tour plus all three Tests against England.

Archibald “Archie” Brown was 26 when he decided to go North and join the professional game with Leeds in 1921.

Brown was born in Crosskeys, and played at club level for Cross Keys RFC, Risca RFC, and Newport RFC. He won his only cap for Wales against Ireland in March 1921 in Belfast before switching codes and making his debut for Leeds against Featherstone at Headingley on 29th August 1921. In total, he made 25 appearances for Leeds, scoring six tries, before moving to Dewsbury.
