Varsity match to be Rhinos curtain-raiser

Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds will go head-to-head in the second rugby league Varsity game to be hosted at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Friday 24 April.

The game will be the curtain-raiser to one of the most hotly contested fixtures in the rugby league calendar, Leeds Rhinos v Warrington Wolves in the First Utility Super League.

The Rugby League Varsity game forms part of the Leeds Varsity event which sees teams from the Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds go head to head in a number of sports throughout the year.  Leeds Beckett have retained the prestigious Varsity trophy for 10 successive years with last year’s competition being fiercely fought across 60 fixtures in 25 different sports.

Leeds Beckett University has an illustrious record in rugby league with a string of national student titles and a prestigious list of alumni and current students including Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield and his team mates Jamie Peacock and Jimmy Keinhorst.

The University of Leeds's rugby league club has seen major leaps forward in both individual talent and as a team. In 2014/15 the team had their most successful season to date finishing first in the BUCS Northern 1A league and going 13 games unbeaten; guaranteeing they will be no push over for the formidable Leeds Beckett side.

Leeds Beckett recently made history in retaining the BUCS Championship title for an astounding tenth year in a row as they defeated Team Northumbria 24-6.

The University of Leeds triumphed against Swansea with a comprehensive 63-22 score line to claim the BUCS Trophy; they now go into the play offs full of confidence that they will be joining their Varsity rivals in the top flight of university rugby next year.

In addition to the Varsity curtain-raiser game there will be Varsity-themed entertainment in between the two games with the two universities going head-to-head in an on-pitch challenge and performances from the cheerleading teams.

Students of both universities are invited to support their respective teams and a special student ticket package has been put together to include a ticket in the South Stand, a complimentary drink at the game and access to a post-game after party.  Tickets for Leeds Becket students are available to purchase from the Sports Office, Carnegie Sports Centre, Headingley Campus.
