Top Officials set for Carnegie 9s

Full time Super League Referees Phil Bentham and Ben Thaler have been selected to referee in the prestigious Carnegie Floodlit 9s event held at Headingley Carnegie on Wednesday evening.

The 11 strong team of officials will oversee thirteen 15 minute 9 a-side games between 4.30pm and 9.30pm.

The speed of Nines means the ball is rarely out play and uniquely the in goal touch judge will rule over the drop kick for goal after a try is scored. This will allow the touch judge to be in position at the restart.

Should any of the knock out games end in a tie the games will revert to golden point to decide the winner.

Commenting on the selection Tournament Director Lionel Hurst said, “The match officials have been very supportive of the Nines and we are delighted to have such high quality officials in action for what promises to be a fantastic occasion”

Officials have made just one rule change for 2009 – the sin bin has been reduced to just 2 minutes from five, to reflect the shorter relative duration of a nines match.
