Rhinos Confirm Delaney Capture

Leeds Rhinos have confirmed that they have signed Gold Coast Titans centre Brett Delaney, 23, on a three year contract from the 2010 engage Super League season.

Delaney, who has been with the Titans since their inception in 2007, will move to England in December to begin pre-season with the Champions and is seen a direct replacement for outgoing centre Lee Smith.

Delaney has been an ever present for the Titans this season as they have rose to third place in the NRL table and are set to appear in the Play Offs for the first time in their history at the end of the season.

Commenting on signing for Leeds, the Sydney-born player said, “When I was first approached by Leeds Rhinos I was really keen to speak to them. Having spoken with Gary Hetherington and Brian McClennan, I have been impressed with the professionalism of the club and the culture of the team. I have really enjoyed my time at the Titans and hopefully that will end on a high with our first appearance in the semi finals.

“I remember speaking to Richie Mathers when he played with us in 2007 about his time at Leeds and he could not speak highly enough about the club and the city of Leeds. I know it will take me time to settle into a new club, a new competition and a new country but by agreeing a three year deal there is a commitment from me and the club to make a success of my time at Leeds.

“I know that the Rhinos have been successful in recent years and I want to help them maintain that success. I am still relatively young at 23 and I still have a lot to learn. I am looking forward to training and playing with the world class players in the Leeds squad and especially Keith Senior, who is one of the world’s best centres.

“I picked up an injury on Friday night but hopefully I will be back the week before the semi finals. I have only missed three games in three seasons at the Titans so I can’t wait to get back fit again.

“I am looking forward to working with Brian McClennan and the rest of the Rhinos coaching staff. I remember Brian from his time with the New Zealand national team and, having spoken to him on the phone, he has already made me feel at home with the Rhinos,” added Delaney, who played for Parramatta before joining the Titans.

Head Coach Brian McClennan welcomed the signing of Delaney, he commented, “Brett is a quality addition to our squad for next season. He has done a great job for the Titans for past three seasons making over 50 appearances in the NRL and played in the City v Country match last season. However, he is still only 23 and it is a positive that he is still keen to learn and develop. We look forward to welcoming him to the club for pre-season and I am sure he will enjoy life at the Rhinos.”
