On Saturday the 16th August thousands of children and their families will visit Headingley Carnegie Stadium for the largest children’s event in Leeds for 45 years! This spectacular event has been organised by the Garry Chappelow Memorial fund in partnership with Leeds Rugby Foundation. Children’s Day was traditionally held at Roundhay Park and from 1922 to 1963 it was a major event in every Loiners social calendar. Every year thousands of school pupils from the local area would gather on Roundhay Park to take part in displays, sports and dancing. Although the scale of this event is unlikely to be replicated, organisers hope children and their families will have a fun and memorable day out. The event will be opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of Leeds at 11am and will run through until 6pm. There will be a host of activities, displays and entertainment throughout the day including live bands, children’s rides and an opportunity to meet with reigning Super League champions Leeds Rhinos. Organiser Les Marshall said, "Our aim is to have 5,000 children, young children and their families at the stadium on the 16 August. The money raised will make a real difference to the development of junior sport within the city." Gary Hetherington, Chief Executive of Leeds Rugby commented, "Success and performance at the highest level is dependant on the facilities open to children and the development of sport at grass roots level. This unique partnership between Garry Chappelow Memorial fund and Leeds Rugby Foundation has allowed us to put on an event that will provide children and young people the opportunity to become involved with sports and other activity." The event is free for children 5 and under and for all others entry is just £3. Tickets can be purchased from the Leeds Rugby Ticket Office at Headingley Carnegie Stadium or direct from organiser Les Marshall on 07891 270590.
