ON THIS DAY

On the 30th May in 1971 former Leeds player Adrian Vowles was born in Charleville and in 2003 Leeds were on the road to face Wigan.

On this day in 1971 former Leeds player Adrian Vowles was born in Charleville, Queensland. Adrian joined the Rhinos at the end of the 2001 season from local rivals Castleford Tigers. Vowles showed his adaptability on his debut when Daryl Powell asked him to play at centre against Bradford Bulls although he is predominantly known as a forward. Vowles left Leeds at the start of August 2002 to join Wakefield Trinity Wildcats as Player Coach. On this day in 1997 Leeds played Warrington and recorded their biggest win of the season. The Rhinos had lost just three league games over the season but just four days prior to this fixture they had dropped points with a 30-30 draw against Castleford. Both Francis Cummins and Barrie McDermott ensured that the team were back to winning ways in this game with a brace of tries each. Anthony Farrell, Iestyn Harris, Graham Holroyd, Marcus St Hilaire and Paul Sterling were also try scorers and Harris also added the rest of the points in the 50-12 win with 7 goals. On this day in 1999 the Rhinos took on Castleford and managed a draw thanks to the boot of Iestyn Harris. Coming into the game Leeds had won their last four fixtures and in the game prior to this fixture they had recorded a convincing 70-22 win over Halifax. In that game against the Blue Sox the Rhinos had managed to score 12 tries but in this match only Lee Jackson was able to cross the Tigers’ line. Iestyn Harris was on form though and with four goals secured the Rhinos a 12-12 draw. On this day back in 2003 Leeds were on the road to face Wigan. Coming into this game the Rhinos had lost to Bradford Bulls, but in this game bounced back and with a 30-20 win. Wigan had eased into a 14-0 lead early on before Leeds cut the lead to two points at the break thanks to tries from Francis Cummins and Mark Calderwood. In the second half Danny McGuire, Rob Burrow and Gary Connolly all scored tries and with 5 goals from Kevin Sinfield the team sealed the win that saw them return to the top of Super League
