The Rhinos Foundation Academy had to settle for a 14-14 draw in their second game of their season at St Helens on Saturday. Only a late Danny Lawton penalty kick, that hit the cross bar, denied Leeds Rhinos victory though as they had fought back from a 14-0 deficit. But the Rhinos had to settle for a share of the spoils against a well drilled St Helens side that lost its way after getting into the lead. Saint built up their advantage in the opening 20 minutes and took the lead as early as the 6th minute when Dave South crossed in the corner. Further tries followed from Martin Waring and Scott Atkin, with Jamie Ellis adding one conversion. Leeds though hit back just before half time when Jonathan Schofield, son of Garry, crossed in the corner. Danny Lawton was unable to convert but it was he who crossed the line twice to bring the Rhinos back into the game before adding the conversion that tied the game up after 53 minutes. St Helens had Warren Godran sin binned in the incident that led to the penalty attempt for Lawton and the Leeds defence had to be on its toes in the very last minute when great defence Dave Watmough forced Dave South into touch in goal when he seemed a certain scorer to leave the final score at 14-14. For the Rhinos the go forward from John Elkington was a feature of the game, Danny Lawton was superb at full back and Mathew Fox caught the eye as well. It was, truth be told, a team effort and after much deliberation the SouthStander.com man of the match went to the hooker Paul McShane, his organisation and drive being instrumental in the Rhinos comeback.
