Leeds’ prolific stand-off Danny McGuire has been named as the Rugby League Writers Association Player of the Year. The 21-year-old McGuire, who smashed the Super League tryscoring record this season, pipped Wigan captain Andy Farrell for the award and will receive his prize at the association’s annual dinner and presentation evening on November 16. Bradford winger Lesley Vainikolo, who overtook McGuire’s try tally on the last day of the regular season with his 37th touchdown, came third in the voting. All three players are thought to be in the reckoning for the prestigious Man of Steel award which will be named on Tuesday.
