Leeds Rhinos go for the try of the century! This time it’s not about points, but saving a species… When you think of a rhino, what image does it conjure up? Tough, strong, invincible, charismatic, fearless – just like the Leeds Rhinos in fact. However, the truth is, unlike the Super League champions out on pitch today, their real-life namesakes are far from winning the fight for survival, with four of the five species on the critically endangered list. Poaching for their home and loss of habitat have resulted in this once-thriving lord of the savannah being reduced in numbers from a world population of 500,000 at the beginning of the 20th century to fewer than 18,000 surviving today. That’s why Leeds Rhinos have joined forces with Save the Rhino International to kick-start a programme of activities, to tackle the threats to rhinos head-on. At today’s play-off match, look out for Rugby League’s best-loved mascot, Ronnie, getting into trouble with Save the Rhino’s Reggie Rhino – better known for charging past people in the London Marathon! They’ll be running around with buckets to help you lighten your pockets and support our cause. There’s lots of activities planned for the forthcoming months including merchandise sales through the official Leeds Rhinos website (www.leedsrugby.com) and in the club shop plus some exciting joint activities and events – watch this space for more info!
