Friday night sees first and third in Tetley’s Super League go head to head with Huddersfield have their best start to a season for over four decades and a place in the Powergen Challenge Cup semi final looming next week. Huddersfield recorded their first win over Leeds since 12th September 1964 last season at McAlpine Stadium when two tries each from Brandon Costin and Stanley Gene completed a memorable 30-24 win for team then coached by Tony Smith. The last time Huddersfield won at Headingley in any competition was the semi final of the Yorkshire Cup in 1960 when Lewis Jones had a rare off day with the boot, Leeds scoring tries through Rosenburg (2) and Hodgkinson, but going down 12-9. The last league success for Huddersfield in LS6 was on 9th September 1959, a season in which Huddersfield did the double over Leeds. Leeds finished in 14th place that season, two places below Huddersfield, however kicked on the following season to win the Championship. The Huddersfield squad includes three former Rhinos players. Hefin O’Hare moved to the Rhinos from sister club Leeds Tykes but did not play for the first team before moving onto Huddersfield. Darren Fleary joined the Rhinos in 1997 from Keighley and featured in the Grand Final in 1998 and Challenge Cup Final in 2000 as well as winning the Cup in1999. In total, Fleary made 116 starts plus 11 substitute appearances, scoring five tries. Likewise, Marcus St Hilaire also played in all three finals and he was a try scorer at Wembley. He joined the Rhinos from the Giants in 1996 and went on to make 65 starts and 45 substitute appearances, scoring 39 tries. The Giants Brandon Costin has scored in the last four meetings between these two sides which makes him the leading Giants try scorer with six tries. Francis Cummins and Iestyn Harris are the leading try scorers for the Rhinos against Huddersfield, although Harris’ haul is due to a record breaking performance in 1999 when the Welshman scored four tries and 13 goals, a total of 42 points.
