Despite dominating large sections of their opening granding phase game of the Junior Academy season, the Rhinos were forced to hang on to claim a draw after a late scare by Salford City Reds. New coach Brian McDermott went into the game giving six trialists a chance to impress and they took an early lead through tries by Ashley Gibson and Jordan Tansey, however Salford hit back just before half time through Steve King to make it 8-6 to the Rhinos at the interval. Leeds again extended their lead through a Andy Gull try and Danny Ireland goal but a late surge by the home side, including a last second try brought the scores level at 14-14. Fortunately for the Rhinos Tim Hartley was unable to add the conversion and the scores remained tied. The Rhinos will field a stronger squad this Thursday as they take on Wigan at Headingley in the curtain raiser for the Bradford Bulls game. The Junior Academy kick off at 5.45pm.
