LEEDS RHINOS DEBUT: v Bradford 06.05.07

The 2012 Rhinos Player of the Year, Ryan Hall finished the season as the club’s top try scorer for the fourth consecutive season and established himself as the World’s Best Winger. He was a try scorer in the World Club and Grand Final victories and was named in the international team of the year as the best winger and was the only Rhino included in the Super League Dream Team of the year. He scored 33 tries in 2012, which included two hat tricks and a four try haul and scored his 100th Super League try against Castleford.

He ended the year playing for England against the Exiles and ended the season scoring two tries against Wales and four tries in the Final of the Autumn international series.

Ryan joined the Academy in 2006 and made seven starts and one appearance for the Junior Academy in his debut season, putting in some exciting performances that led to him breaking through to the Senior Academy team, where he scored three tries in eleven appearances and earned a place in the Senior Academy Grand Final, when the team won the title with victory over Hull.

He ended a fantastic 2006 with a place in the Rhinos side that defeated Wakefield on Boxing Day. Ryan marked his arrival with the final try of the game in the 22-14 win. He then started for the Rhinos in their win over Hunslet in the Lazenby Cup in 2007.

Ryan’s quick progression through the ranks was evident when he was named in the 2007 first team squad, just a year after signing for the club. He made the perfect start to his Leeds career by scoring a try against local rivals Bradford Bulls at the Millennium Stadium as part of the Magic weekend round of fixtures after coming on as replacement. He made his first start a fortnight later in the defeat at Hull and has been part of the first team squad ever since.

The fact that Hall was on the field at the Millennium Stadium at all was a fantastic rag to riches story for the young man. A year earlier he had been spotted playing for amateur club Oulton Raiders by a coach called John Daly.

He contacted Rhinos' then Academy boss John Bastian who told him to come down and look at the young winger. Bastian invited Hall up to Headingley Carnegie for trials and the rest is history.

His second season saw him make 16 appearances and score nine tries, one of which came in the Grand Final victory over St Helens to secure his first piece of silverware with the club.

2009 was an incredible year for Ryan, he led the way as leading try scorer for the entire season, finishing with a total of 32 tries in 30 games, before taking his place in the side who made history by claiming their third consecutive Super League title.

Named Young Player of the Year as well as runner up in the Player of the Year award, Ryan also made an impact on the international scene, scoring a try against France on his England debut before playing in the Four Nations and being named International Rookie of the Year.

Ryan Hall wrote his name into the history books at Leeds Rhinos by scoring a crucial try as the Rhinos retained the title for the first time in the club’s history at Old Trafford. Just before half time, Hall took possession down the wing and spotted the tiniest of gaps down the sideline. He put in a deft grubber kick, that shocked even his coach Brian McClennan at the time, before racing through to touch down in the corner.

That was his 15th appearance of the season and his ninth try of a memorable campaign. The season had begun with Hall and rival Lee Smith alternating on the wing but ended with both in the starting line up at Old Trafford and he was then rewarded by being handed the number five shirt for the 2009 season.

Despite being only 20 when the season ended Ryan showed maturity to play in some high pressure games over the season and earned a place in the Grand Final where he proved he could perform on the biggest of stages. The season was not without its disappointing moments however with Ryan forced to miss part of the campaign after suffering a broken bone in his foot in the defeat to St Helens in Carnegie Challenge Cup semi final.

In 2010 his performances for the Rhinos earned a place in the Engage Super League Dream Team and he was named in the England squad for the Tri Nations and although injury ruled him out of the first Test against New Zealand, he returned for the final game against Papua New Guinea. He also represented England in their 60-6 win over France and featured in the World Club Challenge and Carnegie Challenge Cup Final for the Rhinos.

Ryan grabbed a total of 31 tries in 33 appearances over the 2010 campaign which included four in the Challenge Cup win over Hull and three in the win over Wakefield in the Magic Weekend. His two tries against St Helens in the Challenge Cup Semi Final also helped secure a famous win that put the Rhinos through to the final of the competition.

2011 was another outstanding year for Ryan Hall, who won his third Grand Final winners ring, scoring a try in the Final, finished as the team’s top try scorer for the third consecutive season and scored four tries for England in the Four Nations tournament.

Before getting the chance to become a professional rugby player, Hall had been accepted by the University of Leeds to study for a Mathematics Degree. The young winger is blessed with a calculating mind and is famed amongst his team mates for the speed with which he can complete a Rubik’s Cube puzzle.

Ryan’s favourite film is Forrest Gump and he enjoys listening to rock and indie music. At school he enjoyed Maths and P.E. and he is a keen supporter of his hometown football club Leeds United.

The one thing he could not live without is rugby and the worst thing about the game is losing. If Ryan was Prime Minister he said the first thing he would do is quit!
