Leeds Rhinos 56 Toulouse 18

31st July 2005

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds booked their place in the Powergen Challenge Cup Final but had the fright of their lives by Toulouse.

Adrien Viala shocked everyone in Huddersfield with the opening try after three minutes.  However, the Rhinos soon hit back when four minutes later Richard Mathers’ pin point kick to the corner was palmed back into play by Chev Walker and Chris McKenna collected to touch down in the corner.

Toulouse were undeterred though and James Wynne stepped back inside to evade the cover to score. The Rhinos needed to regain their composure and the man to do it was Gareth Ellis touching down in the corner.

The men from the South of France though were not overawed; Damien Couturier levelled the scores with a penalty from 20 metres out.  Matt Diskin produced a brilliant break from dummy half before coming up with a brilliant offload to McGuire who scored. Burrow's conversion made it 18-12 after 34 minutes.

The Rhinos now looked to turn the screw and Ali Lauitiiti cut a good angle to make the extra man and score.  However, with half time approaching Sebastien Raguin skipped through some weak defence by the Rhinos to score, the conversion from Couturier brought the scores to 22-18 at half time.

The Rhinos got off to the best possible start to the second half when Marcus Bai was on hand to take the pass from Matt Diskin to round off a great team move. Burrow relieved the pressure with a timely 40:20 kick and from the next set the Rhinos scored through Calderwood.

The Rhinos then finally looked to have taken control of the semi final when seven minutes later Burrow added to his points haul for the day with a converted try.

McGuire then raced clear from 40 metres out after a break from Mathers to extend the lead.  The game has been a lot closer contest than many experts predicted however the Rhinos did eventually break the 50 point barrier when Chev Walker used every ounce of his power and strength to force his way over.

The game finished on a high for the Rhinos as Willie Poching scored with the final touch of the game before Barrie McDermott attempted the conversion but pushed it wide to leave the final score 56-18.
