Leeds Rhinos 54 Catalans Dragons 8

27th April 2007

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos moved to top spot in engage Super League with a big win over Catalans Dragons at Headingley Carnegie.

Leeds were dealt an early blow after five minutes when Jamie Peacock limped off the field after twisting his ankle. It got worse for Leeds three minutes later when winger Olivier Charles scored for the visitors.

Lee Smith made a great break down field to get Leeds going and then smart offloads by Gareth Ellis to Kevin Sinfield and then Sinfield to Brent Webb put the New Zealand international over for his seventh try of the season between the posts. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 6-4 after ten minutes.

Leeds then hit the front after 22 minutes when Keith Senior made a break down the North Stand side. He found the supporting run of Danny McGuire, who had options on either side before drawing the last man and putting Webb in for his second try. Sinfield's conversion making it 12-4.

The Dragons were reduced to 12 men after 26 minutes when Adam Mogg was sin binned for persistent infringements at the ruck. Kylie Leuluai was in a determined mood and with four minutes remaining in the half he set up the next try. He drove the ball ten metres up field despite four tacklers hanging on to him and then managed to get the ball away in the tackle. McGuire passed to Clinton Toopi who cut back inside the defence and stretched for the line to score his third try in three games. Sinfield's conversion making it 18-4 to Leeds at half time.

Leeds started the second half well both on attack and defence. After putting pressure on the Dragons deep in their half, skipper Kevin Sinfield crashed over from close range for a try which he converted himself to make it 24-4 to the home side.

That lead was extended after 46 minutes when Gareth Ellis grabbed a bouncing ball, from a kick by Sinfield, one handed then powered his way to the line before stretching out to score. Sinfield's fifth conversion of the night making it 30-4.

If Leeds were thinking that the job was done they were given a rude awakening after 53 minutes when Alex Chan blew apart the Leeds defence before marauding 40 metres up field. Eventually the ball was fed wide and Mogg scored the Dragons second try of the game. Once again the conversion was missed but the Rhinos lead was now cut to 30-8.
The Rhinos regained their advantage after 63 minutes and it was Ellis again who was at the heart of it. He charged the ball up field before offloading one handed to Webb, the full back glided passed Clint Greenshields and dived over for his hat trick. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 36-8.

Webb should have had a fourth try with ten minutes remaining but seem to be very harshly done to by referee Ben Thaler who adjudged he had been held up although he appeared to get the ball down on two occasions. However, it mattered little for the Rhinos as from the 10 metre restart, Sinfield put a pin point accurate kick to the corner which was caught brilliantly in mid air by Scott Donald who went in for his 11th try of the season. Sinfield's conversion making it 42-8.

Leeds weren't done there though as Burrow took advantage of a great break by Toopi down the South Stand side and scampered over to score. Sinfield's conversion making it 48-8 to the Rhinos.

It was left to the Rhinos skipper to wrap up the scoring in the final minute when he went over for his second try of the game, which he converted himself to make it 54-8 to the home side.
