Leeds Rhinos 48 Huddersfield Giants 16

16th May 2015

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos booked their place in the Quarter Final of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup with a comprehensive win over Huddersfield Giants at Headingley Carnegie.

The Rhinos began the defence of their Challenge Cup title with the pick of the games in the Sixth Round and the visit of Paul Anderson’s Huddersfield Giants side.

The Giants have had the Rhinos number in recent years and they early stages were as tough as we have come to expect in these battles. It was an error that finally opened up the game as Scott Grix tried to offload in the tackle only for Kallum Watkins to react quickest and pick up to race 95 metres and score.

The Rhinos doubled their lead soon after when Kevin Sinfield offloaded out of the back of his hand to Watkins for the centre to score his tenth try in 12 career appearances against the Giants. Sinfield, on his return to the side, kicked both conversions to make it 12-0 after 13 minutes.

Leeds continued enjoy the majority of possession and Ryan Hall touch full advantage out wide to mark his return to the side with a try. Sinfield missed the conversion but his side were good value for their 16-0 lead.

The Rhinos fourth try came from a dangerous McGuire kick that Huddersfield failed to deal with and eventually Leroy Cudjoe hacked the ball away only to see it rebound off the post and into the waiting path of Paul Aiton. Sinfield added the conversion and the holders were in a very strong position at 22-0 midway through the first half.

The Giants finally managed to get a foothold in the game after that, mainly led by their interchange with Anthony Mullally, Craig Kopczak and Michael Lawrence given their side significant go forward when they came on. A break by Mullally set up the position for Huddersfield’s first half try. He broke 40m down field and eventually the Giants made their pressure count and Kyle Wood found a gap to go through. Brough missed the conversion attempt to leave the score at 22-4.

Leeds had chances to extend their lead most notably when Sinfield nearly set up Ash Handley and Kallum Watkins out wide but they needed to be on their guard with the final play of the half when Huddersfield desperately chased a try.

The Giants continued to be on the front foot at the start of the second half but it was Leeds who struck first when McGuire made the most of a break by Hall and Moon to go over after taking an offload from the former.  Sinfield added the conversion and a penalty to extend the lead to 30-4.

The Rhinos then sealed the victory with tries from Adam Cuthbertson and Ryan Hall to put the result beyond doubt.

Huddersfield rallied late on with tries from Brett Ferres and Scott Grix but it was too little, too late for the visitors.

The Rhinos fittingly crossed for the final score when Carl Ablett intercepted on half way and raced 50 metres to score between the posts. Sinfield added the conversion to make the final score 48-16.
