Leeds Rhinos 36 Wigan Warriors 24

19th March 2004

By Leeds Rhinos

Rhinos kept up their unbeaten Super League IX start with a 36-24 win over Wigan Warriors in a thrill-a-minute encounter at Headingley.

Danny Tickle put Wigan ahead with a fourth minute penalty, Leeds hit back with two quick-fire tries to move into a 12-2 lead after 12 minutes, both coming from Kevin Sinfield kicks.

Jones-Buchanan firstly raced onto his grubber to collect ahead of Kris Radlinski and touch down, before a Stephen Wild and Martin Aspinwall failed to deal with a cross-field kick and Danny McGuire kicked on to touch down.

Sinfield added both goals, but Leeds indiscipline allowed Wigan to cut the gap to six points through two more Tickle penalties – both awarded for interference from Andrew Dunemann.

Dunemann, though, made amends with the offload which created Leeds' third try, on 29 minutes, with Richard Mathers' long ball allowing Chev Walker to free Francis Cummins on the right.

His pass inside came off both Gareth Hock and Radlinski before bouncing into Wigan's in-goal area, and Jones-Buchanan was on hand to dive over for his second score.

The Warriors also benefited from two good offloads to reply with their first try four minutes later, Danny Sculthorpe and Hock giving Kevin Brown enough space to squeeze over out wide.

Tickle's conversion made the scoreline 18-12, but the Rhinos managed to restore their cushion ahead of the interval with a superb try.

The ball changed hands seven times as Sinfield stepped away up the middle and Rob Burrow, Mathers, McGuire and Matt Diskin all handled before McGuire supported on the inside to take the final pass for his second score.

Sinfeld kicked a penalty on the stroke of half time after Sculthorpe had been placed on report for an off-the-ball challenge on Mathers.

Sinfield added another two points three minutes after the break, following Hock's strip on Diskin.

And the Rhinos moved 18 points in front in a remarkable 60 seconds from the 58th minute.

Warriors loose forward Sean O'Loughlin was denied a try by the video referee for offside from Danny Orr's kick.
And, from the tap restart after the penalty, Rhinos substitute Willie Poching broke through two men and managed to offload in Radlinski's cover tackle for Chev Walker to score.

Wigan did score from an Orr kick on 53 minutes, when Radlinski palmed back his cross-field bomb for Stephen Wild to collect and dive over.

Wild added a splendid second try before the hour mark, Luke Robinson and Tickle freeing Radlinski before the stand-in centre held off three Leeds defenders to touch down in the corner.

Tickle, though, could not convert either try to leave Wigan ten points behind, and Diskin's deserved try – when he span over from dummy half – secured Leeds' win.

Aspinwall had the final say when he just managed to touch down at the corner, despite Marcus Bai's last-ditch tackle, but the Rhinos had already done enough to keep up their winning start to the campaign.
