Leeds Rhinos 32 London Broncos 12

1st July 2005

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds faced a tough challenge against the Broncos and it was not until 11 minutes that McGuire finally broke the deadlock when he scooped up a loose pass by the Broncos and raced in from 40 metres out. Sinfield added the conversion from the touchline.

London hit back when Bradley-Qalilawa took the ball out wide and dived for the corner, although he appeared to put a foot in touch. Paul Sykes added the touchline conversion to make it 6-6 after 23 minutes.

It took the Rhinos another ten minutes to re-take the lead. Leeds shifted the ball to the right hand side and Willie Poching released Chev Walker, who slid in at the corner, Sinfield could not add the conversion, making the score 10-6 at half time.

A shock looked on the cards when Haumono crashed his way over on 52 minutes, Sykes coolly added the conversion to give the Broncos the lead 12-10.

However, the rattled Rhinos came firing back and it was fitting that Rob Burrow scored the next try. He had stopped a certain try five minutes earlier with a fantastic tackle on Luke Dorn and now he was on hand to slide in from three metres out. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 16-12 to Leeds.

The game was still on a knife edge when London forced a drop out however a great piece of tactical kicking from Sinfield came off. Sinfield's drop out was hit skidding across the wet ground and Bradley-Qalilawa could not control the ball. From there the Rhinos moved the ball down field and forced a scrum by dragging Wells into touch.
And from the base of the scrum Sinfield darted from the pack, drawing the defence and popping a perfect pass to McGuire to score.

The Rhinos then had a 20 metre re-start and Sinfield, spotting that the London line had all come up, kicked down field for Calderwood to chase. Luisi just got back in time but the hard work of Calderwood paid off with a drop out. From the ensuing set of six, Senior forced his way over to become only the 20th player in the club's history to score 100 tries.
Tyrone Smith was then sin binned for a late hit on Dunemann and the Rhinos wrapped up the game from the penalty. Senior’s brilliant touch left Bai with a simple touchdown to make it 32-12 and book the Rhinos place in the Challenge Cup semi final for the 11th time in 13 seasons.
