Leeds Rhinos 30 v Salford 8

2nd September 2016

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos continued their unbeaten run in the Super 8s with a hard fought win over Salford Red Devils at Headingley Carnegie.

The Rhinos 30-8 triumph was principally down to the incessant hard work of Jamie Jones-Buchanan who crossed for the first try on five minutes and produced a superb offload to set up the position for Kallum Watkins’ eleventh try in eight games just before half time.

That came after Salford’s Gareth O’Brien had been sin binned for a professional foul just after the Red Devils had gone ahead.

Leeds were also superbly served by hooker James Segeyaro who set up the first try, had a hand in all the others and scored his sixth in five games, hacking on twice from a dropped ball by Josh Griffin in midfield.

As well as the sinbinning, the game changed just before Segeyaro’s effort when former Rhino Weller Hauraki was denied in the 49th minute for a double movement.

The early Leeds advantage was immediately rubbed out when Michael Dobson’s high kick was palmed bck by Josh Griffin, Dobson sending in George Griffin, the game then going off the boil until O’Brien’s 32nd minute penalty edged the visitors 8-6 in front.

After his indiscretion, Segeyaro, Jones-Buchanan, Joel Moon and Brett Ferres sent in Watkins. Sutcliffe missed the conversion and did not come back for the second half after suffering a back injury.

Early in the second period, first half sub Jordan Lilley added a penalty to make it 12-8 and, after Segeyaro had crossed, his offload to Watkins set the position for Rob Burrow’s crosskick to the corner which Tom Briscoe palmed back for Carl Ablett, Lilley with the touchline conversion.

Stevie Ward, on an emotional night with tributes paid to president Harry Jepson on his passing this week beforehand, made his return after 1 months out, helping Leeds to maintain a clean sheet in the second half.
